Salt Lake

Salt Lake

Salt Lake, an affluent, upper-middle class neighborhood in suburban Honolulu, was built in the 1960’s construction boom as high-rise condos, mid-rise town homes and houses. The neighborhood is in the middle of military installations. To the south is Honolulu International Airport. The name Salt Lake refers to a shallow lake that was formed in the bowl of one of three overlapping volcanic craters. (In the largest of these, the development of Salt Lake was constructed.) The lake was extremely salty until a drainage outlet removed the salt. Today, the lake consists of fresh water.

The population of Salt Lake is 30,000 with a large portion of residents being Honolulu professionals and Army, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard officers living off base. The area has extensive parks, green belts, and hiking trails. Salt Lake also has the distinction of having a public school, Moanaloa High School, ranked with the prestigious Punahou and Iolani private schools.
